In this workshop we will focus on the importance of interpersonal relationships as a key to recovery. Our patients often have significant disruptions in their ability to foster healthy connections with family, friends, and the world around them as a result of insecure attachments and other early childhood traumas. By exploring the evidence-based interventions of polyvagal theory and attachment theory we can begin to acknowledge, heal, and hone our patients’ “biological imperative” to develop and maintain meaningful connections.
Learning Objectives:
1.Explain Stephen Porges’ Polyvagal Theory and how early childhood trauma upends the natural course of its crucial development.
2.Explain Attachment Theory and describe the role of early childhood trauma in development of destructive behaviors.
3.List and describe least two techniques they can do with their clients to help them increase their biological capacity to socially connect.
